Aftercare Instructions

Caring for Your Pet After Surgery

Your pet’s safety and comfort remain our top priority—both during and after their procedure. Proper home care helps your pet heal smoothly and reduces the risk of complications. Please follow the instructions below carefully, and contact Pinnacle Pet Health right away if you notice anything concerning.

Rest and Activity

  • Keep your pet in a quiet, comfortable space away from other animals and children for at least 24 hours after surgery.
  • Limit activity—no running, jumping, or rough play for 10–14 days or until your veterinarian advises otherwise.
  • Leash walks for bathroom breaks only.

Eating and Drinking

  • Offer small amounts of water when you bring your pet home.
  • You may offer a light meal a few hours later if they’re fully awake. Some pets may not want to eat the first night—this is normal.
  • Resume regular feeding the next day unless your veterinarian provides different instructions.

Incision Care

  • Check the incision site twice daily for redness, swelling, discharge, or an opening in the stitches.
  • Do not allow licking or chewing. Use an e-collar or recovery suit as needed.
  • Keep the incision clean and dry—no baths or swimming for at least 14 days.

Medications

  • Give all prescribed medications exactly as directed.
  • If your pet vomits after taking medication or seems unusually lethargic, call our office before giving another dose.

Monitoring and When to Call Us

Contact Pinnacle Pet Health immediately at (304) 241-4460 if you notice:

  • Excessive bleeding or discharge at the incision site
  • Missing stitches or a gaping wound
  • Persistent vomiting or refusal to eat after 24 hours
  • Swelling, foul odor, or signs of pain (crying, trembling, hiding)
  • Lethargy lasting more than a day

Follow-Up Care

Most pets will need a recheck appointment in 10–14 days to ensure proper healing. Please schedule this before leaving your initial appointment or by calling us anytime during business hours.
